Forming Worlds Lab Code of Conduct
The Forming Worlds Lab is highly diverse in culture and gender. Our group and the University of Groningen strive to be a university in which students and staff are respected and feel at home, regardless of differences in background, experiences, perspectives, and identities. We believe that working on our core values of inclusion and equality are a joint responsibility and we are constructively working on creating a socially safe environment. Diversity among students and staff members enriches academic debate and contributes to the quality of our teaching and research. For more information, see also the Diversity and Inclusion Policy of the University of Groningen.
The Forming Worlds Lab is dedicated to providing a harassment-free, safe environment for everyone, regardless of race, nationality, religion (or lack thereof), gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, politics, and appearance. Harassment of group members is not tolerated, in any form. All research group members are expected to adhere to this Code of Conduct during all academia- and group-related activities, such as presentations at Kapteyn or other institutes, attending conferences and public education events.
Forms of harassment include, but are not limited to: sexual imagery or language, verbal comments that re-enforce social structures of domination, racially charged language or jokes, deliberate intimidation or stalking, inappropriate physical contact, unwelcome attention including photography and recording, sustained disruption of talks and advocating for any of the above.
If you are being harassed, or notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any concerns, please contact Tim Lichtenberg immediately. If Dr. Lichtenberg is the cause of your concern, or for concerns that need to be addressed at a higher level, please contact the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Confidential Advisor, or your HR advisor at the University of Groningen.
For small incidents, group members that are found to violate the code of conduct will receive a verbal warning and a chance to remedy their behaviour. Group members that are found to be in frequent violation with minor incidents may be asked to leave the research group at the end of the semester. Group members that are in gross violation of the code of conduct will be asked to leave the research group immediately.
Some element of this code of conduct are adapted from 1, 2, 3.
