How to Get to Kapteyn

The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute is located on the first and second floor of the SRON building on the Zernike Campus, on the northern edge of Groningen. The entrance is shared with SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research, opposite the Foodcourt Zernike.

Finding the entrance

The Kapteyn building entrance is located opposite the Foodcourt Zernike and at the same entrance as SRON. The nearest bus stops are "Zernikeplein" and "Nijenborgh", both within a 1 to 2 minute walk. Open entrance location in Google Maps →

Important: Do not use the official main entrance to Kapteynborg (the larger entrance on the south side of the building). That entrance is disconnected from the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute. Use the smaller entrance shared with SRON (see Google Maps pin above).

The entrance door is access-restricted. Ring the bell or follow someone in, and the secretariat will let you in. The secretariat is on the first floor (first door on the right). If you are visiting for a talk or meeting, they will be expecting you and can provide keys for a guest office.

By bus

From Groningen Central Station or city centre, take any bus heading to the Zernike Campus. Get off at "Zernikeplein" or "Nijenborgh", both within a 1 to 2 minute walk.

Buses run every 10 to 15 minutes. You can tap your debit or credit card on the card scanners when boarding and when leaving the bus. Remember to tap out when you exit. Cash is also accepted.

By train

Groningen is reachable by direct train from Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Zwolle, as well as from cities in northern Germany (via Leer).

Check NS.nl for Dutch train schedules or DB Navigator for international connections. From Groningen Central Station, take a bus to the Zernike Campus.

By plane

The nearest major airport is Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS), roughly 2.5 hours by direct intercity train from Groningen (roughly once per hour).

Groningen Airport Eelde (GRQ) is closer but serves limited destinations.

By car or bicycle

From the A28/E232 motorway, follow signs to the Zernike Campus. Parking is available on campus (paid). Enter "Landleven 12, 9747 AD Groningen" in your navigation system.

Groningen is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. The Zernike Campus is roughly 3 km north of the city centre, a flat 10 to 15 minute ride. Bike racks are available at the entrance.
